The arrival of a child is one of life's most profound experiences — and one of the biggest challenges to a couple's intimate life. Sleep deprivation, shifting roles, body changes, and the sheer demands of parenting can push intimacy to the background.
This Is Normal
First, know that a temporary decline in intimate frequency and desire after having children is completely normal. Most couples experience this, and it does not mean your relationship is in trouble.
Redefine Intimacy
Intimacy is not only about sex. During early parenthood, focus on maintaining emotional and physical closeness: holding hands, brief massages, honest conversations about how you are each coping.
Schedule Connection
It may sound unromantic, but intentionally setting aside time for each other — even 15 minutes — signals that your relationship is a priority. Quality matters more than quantity.
Communicate About Changes
Bodies, desires, and needs change after children. Talk openly about what feels good now, what has changed, and what you each need. Approach these conversations with curiosity rather than expectation.
Our Rebuilding Intimacy course includes a dedicated module on the parenthood transition.
